The Vietnam Museum of Ethnology (Vietnamese: Bảo tàng Dân tộc học Việt Nam) is a museum in Hanoi, Vietnam, which focuses on the 54 officially recognised ethnic groups in Vietnam. It is located on a 43,799-square-metre (10.823-acre) property in the Cầu Giấy District, about 8 km from the city center.

About the museum

Vietnam Museum of Ethnology  was established in 1981 in Hanoi with an area of ​​3.27 ha. This work was designed by architect Ha Duc Linh and female architect Veronique Dollfus (French) interior design. The museum is a miniature picture of the history and culture of the 54 ethnic groups in Vietnam with a variety of cultural features. These exhibits are displayed in various categories such as clothing, jewelry, weapons, musical instruments, religious beliefs and many other spiritual activities.

What is the Museum of Ethnology in Vietnam?

The museum is divided into three main galleries: the Dong Dong Building, the outdoor display area and the Southeast Asia Exhibition Hall. From the outside, visitors will be attracted by the presentation, layout from the form to content is very scientific and logical, easy to grasp the color of each nation's culture.

There are two spaces, one space for display and the second floor, while the space for the first floor introduces the identity of 54 ethnic groups. There are 15,000 artifacts, 42,000 footage and images depicting life, costumes, clothing, agricultural tools and religious beliefs as well as customs of ethnic minority people. To serve other sightseeing, the artifacts here are mainly translated into 3 languages: Vietnamese, English, French and some other languages ​​for visitors to visit the museum.

Outdoor gallery

Visitors to the site will see a large courtyard, outdoor exhibition area. The unique architecture of the Tay people, such as the Tay stilt house, the stilt house of the Ede, the Tay house on stilts, the Hmong peo-roofed house on the other side. There are also rice mortar in the garden with Dao water.

Southeast Asia Gallery

Next, visitors can visit the Southeast Asian exhibition area in the museum. From a distance, visitors will find the display area built in kite shape - a traditional culture not only of Vietnam but also of ASEAN. Kites represent dreams, ambitions, for freedom with time.

Here you will find exhibits on Southeast Asian culture, Indonesian paintings, a glimpse of Asia and around the world. There are also educational activities, meeting rooms, movie theaters, multimedia rooms, visitors can view cultural material not only of Vietnam but also of ASEAN countries. This is the bridge, friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and friends in Southeast Asia as well as in many parts of the world.

Visitors not only visit but on Saturday, Sunday every week,  the Museum of Ethnology also organizes many performances of water puppetry, folk arts and folk performances, bold folk festivals.
